Why Is Zakat Important?

Giving Zakat is an essential duty of a Muslim, as it is one of the five Islamic pillars. Every sane adult Muslim who is Sahib-e-Nisab—i.e. owns wealth over a certain amount has an obligation to fulfil Zakat. Zakat is a right that the poor in your community have over its wealthy members.
Know that donating your Zakat is more than just an ethical and religious duty. By paying Zakat, you gain more blessings:
  • Zakat adds to wealth. Allah promises to compensate for every act of spending in His cause.
  • You play your part in bridging social gaps and bringing a community together for the sake of Allah.
  • Zakat acts as a shield against the fires of hell for those who follow Allah with unwavering faith.
This pillar of Islam also fosters wealth distribution, enabling more support for the less fortunate, which helps and promotes equality. At Hazrat Rukun ud Din Trust, we strive to ensure fair Zakat distribution, prioritising your peace of mind when you pay Zakat online.

Understanding Nisab of Zakat

Zakat is due on all forms of wealth, including salary, savings in cash, and gold. You are eligible for Zakat if your wealth meets the Nisab of Zakat—i.e. the least amount of net worth of a Muslim. It is set at the value of 87.48 gms (tolas = 7.5) in gold and 612.36 gms (tolas = 52.5) in silver.

There are various ways of giving Zakat, such as:

  • Donating directly to eligible recipients
  • Delegating Zakat distribution to a collector
  • Donating it to a reputable Islamic charity organisation

If you have several years’ worth of Zakat to pay, you can settle the entire amount at once or create a plan to pay it off gradually. It’s essential to understand that delaying Zakat payments doesn’t eliminate the obligation.

Who Is Eligible To Receive Zakat?

“Alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free captives and debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and for travellers”. (Quran 9:60)

If you want to request where your Zakat contributions go, or you want to make sure that we are distributing your Zakat donation properly, the Quran provides proper guidance in this regard.

When it comes to the people who are eligible recipients of Zakat, the Quran divides them into eight categories:

  1. the people in poverty,
  2. the people who are needy,
  3. the people responsible to collect Zakat
  4. the people who are to be reconciled,
  5. those in slavery,
  6. those in debt,
  7. those who are travelling (while cut off from everything),
  8. those in the way of Allah.

When you choose to pay Zakat online through Hazrat Rukun ud Din Trust, you’re helping with lodging, education and all related resources for thousands of orphans worldwide.
